Ischia, Italy: Boat Days, Thermal Parks & Island Life

If you love the idea of Capri but hate how touristy it is, the neighboring island of Ischia will leave you in awe, and longing to go back.

Ischia isn’t for the tourist. It’s for the traveler.

At a glance

How long: 4 nights

Getting there: Ferry from Naples, 1 to 1.5 hours

Getting around: Buses by day, taxis at night, or a moped

Don’t miss: A day on a private boat, Negombo thermal park, Sant’Angelo

Where we stayed: Hotel Grifo

A day at sea

around the island by boat

If you have the chance, rent a traditional gozzo boat and hire a captain for the day to take you around the island. We booked through West Coast Ischia and had the most fabulous captain, Dario. We met at the dock in Casamicciola Terme at 10 a.m. and set off for a day at sea.

We headed counterclockwise around the island, past the Fungo mushroom rock in Lacco Ameno and the beautiful white church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, perched on a cliff in Forio. We stopped for a swim in a cove near Negombo.

The water got rough rounding Forio and Panza. The boat company even radioed to check in, since most boats were turning around. We didn’t. The swell was nothing, and it actually rocked my baby girl to sleep.

Dario drove the boat into a grotta, a huge sea cave, and pointed out rock formations along the dramatic coast that looked like a foot, a camel, Dumbo and a lion.

We swam again near Sant’Angelo (I even got my daughter in the water with me), stopped in port for gelato and a wander, then set off for the most breathtaking lunch.

Lunch at Nido del Falco

Nido del Falco, “the falcon’s nest,” is only reachable by boat. We moored offshore, a little tender brought us to the dock, and we climbed 300 steps to the best lunch view you could ask for.

The Green Cave

After lunch we stopped in another cove and swam into the Green Cave. The entrance was tiny and tight, but inside it opened into a bigger cave with a beach! The swell lifted me up each time, and I had to hold the roof of the cave to steady myself.

Snorkeling at the castle

Our last stop was the cove below Castello Aragonese, where we snorkeled. Bubbles rose from the sponge-like sea floor: thermal water coming up from below! We were back in port by 5:30, with time to clean up before dinner.

Thermal springs

a day at negombo

Ischia is full of thermal springs, and you have to try them at least once. Negombo Thermal Park was huge and not crowded, with seating everywhere. We found a shady spot for the baby and set up camp for the day. The café lunch was divine.

The pools range in temperature, each with different restorative benefits. The thermal water was much too hot for my little girl, so I took her swimming in the sea.

Sant’Angelo

a slow day in a car-free village

Take a day to explore Sant’Angelo. We rode the bus around the island. The roads are narrow and the drivers go at breakneck speed. It’s a wild ride!

Sant’Angelo is a walking village, with little golf carts making deliveries. We had gelato, then spent the day on the beach (two loungers and an umbrella were €30) and had lunch at a café by the marina. Wander the streets, pop into the shops and enjoy the slow pace.

Where to eat

seafood, every night

Ischia is known for its seafood, and it delivered.

  • Cantinando in Casamicciola was a hidden gem. Our hotel recommended it and made the reservation. It’s down a set of stairs, in a tiny room of maybe 10 tables, and the food was simply amazing. I had insalata di polpo, spaghetti alle vongole, tiramisu and limoncello.
  • I Ricci in Ischia Porto had amazing seafood and a great view of the yachts.
  • Ristorante Da Coco in Ischia Ponte, at the foot of Castello Aragonese, has the most beautiful view of the castle lit up at night. The calamari was so good I ordered a second plate, and we came back again.

Tip: Italians eat dinner late. I fed my daughter during our appetizers, then walked her in the stroller until she fell asleep, and we finished dinner with a sleeping baby. So many moms were doing the same thing!

Getting here and around

ferries, buses and mopeds

Ferries run daily from Naples. The fast hydrofoils (Alilauro and Caremar) take about an hour, and the slower ferries (Medmar and Caremar) about an hour and a half.

On the island, we used the buses during the day and taxis at night. Some hotels have shuttles, ours did. Taxis can be expensive, so take the bus for longer trips. Without a baby, I’d explore by moped!

Where to stay

hotel grifo

We stayed at Hotel Grifo, and it was perfect for what we needed. The staff spoke English and were so helpful, and there was a pool with a little bar and breakfast in the lobby. The rooms were nothing fancy. There’s a spa too, though with an 8-month-old I didn’t get to use it.

Questions

ischia, answered

How do you get to Ischia?

Take a ferry from Naples. Fast hydrofoils take about an hour and slower ferries about an hour and a half, with several companies running daily.

Is Ischia better than Capri?

For us, yes. Ischia is bigger, quieter and less touristy, with thermal parks, a car-free village in Sant’Angelo and coastline you can explore by boat all day.

Do you need a car on Ischia?

No. Use the buses by day and taxis at night, or rent a moped. The roads are narrow and busy.

After traveling with Summer to the Azores and having such a wonderful experience, I knew I wanted to travel with her again. Tanzania did not disappoint!

This trip was extra special because it had been a dream of my mom’s for 25 years. We finally made it happen! Getting to share this experience with her made it all the more meaningful.

The trip itself was incredible. The sheer number and variety of animals we saw was amazing, from herds of elephants to lions, leopards, cheetahs, and giraffes. One of the biggest highlights was witnessing the Great Migration of wildebeest. It’s hard to put into words how special it was to see it all in person!

The accommodations were fantastic, with a wonderful mix of lodges and tented camps, and the food was delicious throughout the trip. A special shoutout to our incredible safari guides, Pascale and Goodwin, whose knowledge and expertise made our wildlife encounters even more memorable.

Summer did a wonderful job organizing everything and taking care of the details, allowing us to relax and enjoy the experience. Beyond the wildlife, it was the combination of experiencing a new culture, being immersed in nature, and sharing these unforgettable moments with an amazing group of women that made the trip so special.

Both the Azores and Tanzania have given me memories I’ll carry with me for a long time. I wouldn’t hesitate to travel with Summer and Out Making Memories again, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for an adventure filled with incredible experiences and meaningful connections!

I honestly don’t know if I have enough words to describe what an incredible experience this trip was with Out Making Memories!

From start to finish, it was truly an amazing adventure. Seeing so many incredible animals up close was absolutely unforgettable, and every day seemed to bring another “pinch me” moment. The food was wonderful, the scenery was breathtaking, and the accommodations were beyond what I expected. And the tents we stayed in along the way were luxurious, comfortable, and such a unique part of the experience!

Our guides were exceptional. They were so knowledgeable, passionate, and eager to share their knowledge with us. I learned so much about the animals, the environment, and the places we visited, which made the experience even more meaningful.

And then there’s Summer. She is absolutely wonderful! You can tell how much thought, care, and personal attention she puts into every detail. She has a real gift for creating experiences that feel effortless for the traveler while still being incredibly special and well planned. She didn’t just organize a trip—she created an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. If you are considering a trip to Africa, I cannot encourage you enough to consider Out Making Memories as your tour company… trust me, you will not regret it!

I came home with incredible memories, amazing stories, and a whole new appreciation for travel and adventure. If you’re considering traveling with Out Making Memories, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I can’t wait to see where Summer takes us next!

Thank you, Summer, for an unforgettable adventure! ❤️

The accommodations were all fantastic, clean sheets, hot water, good food, tastefully appointed lodges, and there was more quality produce and fresh baked goods than we could eat. I continue to be impressed with the other travelers who have shared their time with me. These accomplished and professional women are inspirational. I thought 14 days would be too long and by day ten I wished it was longer. She had personally stayed at them all which provided us a great deal of confidence as we were going somewhere we had never been. The accommodations, the food and the people at each lodge were outstanding. Summer made all the arrangements and was available for questions when we were in country which was a great support.

What made the trip so special was the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, great food, and wonderful company. We explored crater lakes, soaked in thermal pools, visited picturesque towns, hiked scenic trails, and enjoyed daily jeep excursions that took us to spectacular viewpoints and hidden gems across the islands.

A huge part of the trip's success was our tour leader, Summer. Her planning was exceptional, and every detail was thoughtfully arranged. The itinerary offered the perfect mix of activities and downtime, allowing us to experience the best of the Azores without ever feeling rushed. The restaurant selections were excellent, providing memorable meals and opportunities to connect with the group after each day's adventures.

Our Hotel and Restaurants were all well vented and all provided top accommodations and five star cuisine.
Hotels were clean and comfortable and provided a wide range of experiences from the traditional Riads to top class hotels. These really were above my expectations and truly appreciated.
We were exposed to all types of landscapes and adventures including Marrakesh, the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, the Atlantic Ocean, Valleys and Irrigation systems. It was so interesting to learn about the people and experience the small towns and the Nomad Villages. I can say that I saw the very best of Morocco and this trip has also opened my mind to the people and landscapes of this part of the world.

Our adventures were so diverse and I truly meant that there was a surprise around every corner. I would have appreciated some prior knowledge of the more physical challenges and feel that the activity level should have been advertised. I wanted to do everything but my personal physical limitations did challenge me so prior knowledge to opt out of the mountain hike would have been appreciated.

Morocco is fabulous and the shopping was so much fun and very fitting for our ladies group. I felt very safe in the city even at night and I also felt that your support and knowledge of where to go and what to see was excellent.

Our Moroccan guide (Ali) was so kind, patient and accommodating. I believe he was a big part of the trip and ensuring that we were safe and that our needs were met. Of course his driving was "professional" and even in those mountains I felt safe and looked after. I thank Ali and his family for welcoming us into his home and for his lovely wife to provide us each with a Henna. This was a unexpected and I am grateful for this experience.

Summer, I admire your passion for building your company and wish you lots of success in the future.

Thank you from your new Canadian Friend.
