Sintra Day Trip from Lisbon (with Kids)

Sintra is the best day trip from Lisbon, and a visit belongs on every Lisbon itinerary. Hidden in these pine-covered hills are extravagant palaces, mansions and the ruins of an ancient castle.

It’s not often you step right into a fairytale. That’s exactly how Sintra feels.

Just know going in that it’s a tourist destination. Expect crowds, and higher prices for entrance fees and transportation than anywhere else in Portugal.

At a glance

How long: One full day, three sights

From Lisbon: About 40 minutes by train from Rossio station, or an Uber

Don’t miss: Quinta da Regaleira, Castelo dos Mouros, Pena Palace

Getting around: Bus 434, taxis or tuk-tuks (no kids under 7 on tuk-tuks)

With kids: Leave the stroller in Lisbon and bring a carrier

Bringing kids

leave the stroller at home

Don’t bring a stroller. If you can’t wear your baby or toddler, I’d honestly skip Sintra. A stroller will hold you back from really exploring the palaces.

I brought my Onbuhimo backpack carrier for my 18-month-old daughter and it was perfect. I let her walk a lot, but some areas weren’t kid friendly and it was much easier to just wear her.

Tip: Children under 7 aren’t allowed in tuk-tuks, so plan on a taxi or the bus to get between sights. And wear good shoes: there is a lot of walking in Sintra.

Our day

one perfect day, three sights

The highlights of a day trip are Palácio Nacional da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros and my favorite, Quinta da Regaleira.

Here’s how we did it. Our Uber dropped us at Quinta da Regaleira, where we explored the grounds and grabbed a bite at the café. We walked back to São Martinho and caught a taxi to Pena, then took the shuttle bus from the gate up to the palace and back.

From there we walked downhill to Castelo dos Mouros and walked the whole length of the castle walls. Then an Uber back to Lisbon.

Quinta da Regaleira

grottos, tunnels and a well that spirals into the earth

Quinta da Regaleira was built between 1904 and 1910, in the last days of the Portuguese monarchy. Its owner, Carvalho Monteiro, commissioned the Italian architect Luigi Manini to turn the estate into what it is today.

The grounds are magical. Footpaths twist through lush gardens to grottos and underground passages, and you could spend hours here.

Don’t miss the Initiation Well and the Waterfall Lake. The mossy lake with its stepping stones felt like something out of a storybook.

The mossy lake with its stepping stones felt like something out of a storybook.

Castelo dos Mouros

walking the walls of a romantic ruin

Castelo dos Mouros was restored in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II, who turned it into a romantic ruin. It looms high above the pine forests.

When the clouds peel away and the fog burns off, the views across Sintra to the glittering Atlantic are breathtaking.

The walk along the walls is not an easy one. Uneven stairs, few rails and steep inclines make it not for the faint of heart.

Pena Palace

about as real as fairytale castles get

The Park and National Palace of Pena are the work of King Ferdinand II, and the greatest expression of 19th-century Romanticism in Portugal, with Manueline and Moorish touches everywhere you look.

The palace was built to be visible from any point in the park. It’s said to have inspired King Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein, which in turn inspired Walt Disney’s castle.

Tip: You can see plenty with a park ticket alone. Take the shuttle from the entrance up to the palace, because the walk takes forever, and make sure you walk the walls.

What it costs

tickets and fares

Sintra isn’t a cheap day trip. Here’s what we paid per ticket in 2019. Prices have gone up since, so check each site’s website before you go.

  • Quinta da Regaleira: adult €8, child €5, under 5 free
  • Pena Park and Palace: adult €8, child €6.50, under 5 free
  • Pena shuttle (entrance to palace, round trip): €3 per person
  • Castelo dos Mouros: adult €8, child €6.50, under 5 free

Getting here

from lisbon to sintra

Getting here from Lisbon is easy. Don’t drive: the roads are narrow, full of tourist traffic, and parking is very limited.

  • Train: Trains leave about every 30 minutes from Lisbon’s Rossio station, and the trip takes about 40 minutes.
  • Uber: We took an Uber because I was traveling with my 18-month-old, and the convenience was worth the cost (about €28 for us).

Getting around Sintra

pick three sights and plan your route

Go with a plan for which palaces you want to see. Three in one day leaves plenty of time to explore and to get between them.

  • Bus 434: the cheapest way to get around. It runs a one-way loop from the train station through the historic center and up the hill to Pena Palace and the Moorish castle, with up to four departures an hour. Queues can be long in summer.
  • Tuk-tuks: about €10 per person when we went, but no children under 7.
  • Taxis: about €10 per person when we went.

More from Portugal

where to go next

Questions

sintra, answered

Can you do Sintra in one day?

Yes. Pick three sights. We did Quinta da Regaleira, Pena Palace and Castelo dos Mouros in one day from Lisbon, and it was plenty.

Can you bring a stroller to Sintra?

I wouldn’t. The palaces, grottos and castle walls are full of stairs and uneven paths. A baby carrier makes it so much easier.

How do you get from Lisbon to Sintra?

Take the train from Rossio station (about 40 minutes), or an Uber if you’re traveling with little ones. Don’t drive: parking in Sintra is very limited.

After traveling with Summer to the Azores and having such a wonderful experience, I knew I wanted to travel with her again. Tanzania did not disappoint!

This trip was extra special because it had been a dream of my mom’s for 25 years. We finally made it happen! Getting to share this experience with her made it all the more meaningful.

The trip itself was incredible. The sheer number and variety of animals we saw was amazing, from herds of elephants to lions, leopards, cheetahs, and giraffes. One of the biggest highlights was witnessing the Great Migration of wildebeest. It’s hard to put into words how special it was to see it all in person!

The accommodations were fantastic, with a wonderful mix of lodges and tented camps, and the food was delicious throughout the trip. A special shoutout to our incredible safari guides, Pascale and Goodwin, whose knowledge and expertise made our wildlife encounters even more memorable.

Summer did a wonderful job organizing everything and taking care of the details, allowing us to relax and enjoy the experience. Beyond the wildlife, it was the combination of experiencing a new culture, being immersed in nature, and sharing these unforgettable moments with an amazing group of women that made the trip so special.

Both the Azores and Tanzania have given me memories I’ll carry with me for a long time. I wouldn’t hesitate to travel with Summer and Out Making Memories again, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for an adventure filled with incredible experiences and meaningful connections!

I honestly don’t know if I have enough words to describe what an incredible experience this trip was with Out Making Memories!

From start to finish, it was truly an amazing adventure. Seeing so many incredible animals up close was absolutely unforgettable, and every day seemed to bring another “pinch me” moment. The food was wonderful, the scenery was breathtaking, and the accommodations were beyond what I expected. And the tents we stayed in along the way were luxurious, comfortable, and such a unique part of the experience!

Our guides were exceptional. They were so knowledgeable, passionate, and eager to share their knowledge with us. I learned so much about the animals, the environment, and the places we visited, which made the experience even more meaningful.

And then there’s Summer. She is absolutely wonderful! You can tell how much thought, care, and personal attention she puts into every detail. She has a real gift for creating experiences that feel effortless for the traveler while still being incredibly special and well planned. She didn’t just organize a trip—she created an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. If you are considering a trip to Africa, I cannot encourage you enough to consider Out Making Memories as your tour company… trust me, you will not regret it!

I came home with incredible memories, amazing stories, and a whole new appreciation for travel and adventure. If you’re considering traveling with Out Making Memories, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I can’t wait to see where Summer takes us next!

Thank you, Summer, for an unforgettable adventure! ❤️

I continue to be impressed with the other travelers who have shared their time with me. These accomplished and professional women are inspirational. I thought 14 days would be too long and by day ten I wished it was longer. What made the trip so special was the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, great food, and wonderful company. We explored crater lakes, soaked in thermal pools, visited picturesque towns, hiked scenic trails, and enjoyed daily jeep excursions that took us to spectacular viewpoints and hidden gems across the islands.

A huge part of the trip's success was our tour leader, Summer. Her planning was exceptional, and every detail was thoughtfully arranged. The itinerary offered the perfect mix of activities and downtime, allowing us to experience the best of the Azores without ever feeling rushed. The restaurant selections were excellent, providing memorable meals and opportunities to connect with the group after each day's adventures.

Our Hotel and Restaurants were all well vented and all provided top accommodations and five star cuisine.
Hotels were clean and comfortable and provided a wide range of experiences from the traditional Riads to top class hotels. These really were above my expectations and truly appreciated.
We were exposed to all types of landscapes and adventures including Marrakesh, the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, the Atlantic Ocean, Valleys and Irrigation systems. It was so interesting to learn about the people and experience the small towns and the Nomad Villages. I can say that I saw the very best of Morocco and this trip has also opened my mind to the people and landscapes of this part of the world.

Our adventures were so diverse and I truly meant that there was a surprise around every corner. I would have appreciated some prior knowledge of the more physical challenges and feel that the activity level should have been advertised. I wanted to do everything but my personal physical limitations did challenge me so prior knowledge to opt out of the mountain hike would have been appreciated.

Morocco is fabulous and the shopping was so much fun and very fitting for our ladies group. I felt very safe in the city even at night and I also felt that your support and knowledge of where to go and what to see was excellent.

Our Moroccan guide (Ali) was so kind, patient and accommodating. I believe he was a big part of the trip and ensuring that we were safe and that our needs were met. Of course his driving was "professional" and even in those mountains I felt safe and looked after. I thank Ali and his family for welcoming us into his home and for his lovely wife to provide us each with a Henna. This was a unexpected and I am grateful for this experience.

Summer, I admire your passion for building your company and wish you lots of success in the future.

Thank you from your new Canadian Friend.
